Must See Appellate Panels at MSBA Legal Summit 2023

By: Meaghan Murphy

If you’re attending the MSBA Annual Summit this week in Ocean City, we hope you’ll stop by three panels sponsored or co-sponsored by the MSBA Section of Litigation’s Appellate Practice Committee.

Thursday, June 8, at 1:30 p.m.
You’ve Filed an Appeal – Now What???

(Room 209, co-sponsored with the Litigation Section)

The Hon. Gregory E. Wells (Chief Judge, Appellate Court of Maryland) will offer a behind-the-scenes view of the appellate process, joined by members of the ADR Court Staff and experienced appellate practitioners, including:

Thursday, June 8, at 2:50 p.m.
Preserving Issues for Appellate Review – or How to Avoid Breaking Your Appellate Lawyer’s Heart

(Room 202)

There’s nothing worse for an appellate attorney than to discover that a meritorious argument was not preserved for appeal. This panel features judges and appellate practitioners who can walk you through the pitfalls of the preservation process, including:

Friday, June 9, at 12:15 p.m.
Supreme Court Term in Review
(OCMD Convention Center Ballroom)

Although Maryland now has a Supreme Court of its own, this panel will discuss key U.S. Supreme Court decisions from the 2022 Term and preview decisions anticipated as the Term draws to a close. Expert panelists will discuss cases of national importance and practical importance to Maryland practitioners, including:

  • Hon. Andre Davis, a Baltimore native who has been appointed to serve on several levels of the judiciary at both the state and federal level, from the District Court of Maryland all the way to the Fourth Circuit.
  • Andrew Tutt, an attorney at Arnold & Porter who focuses on Supreme Court, appellate, and complex litigation.
  • Carrie Williams, a partner in Goodell DeVries Appellate practice group, and former Principal Counsel for Criminal Policy at the Maryland Office of the Attorney General.

This should be a lively panel, to say the least.
